The Khao Salak festival is a Buddhist celebration held every years, although it is not observed with the same intensity throughout the country. This festival is unique to the North of Thailand, particularly in the Phayao region. During this ceremony, we celebrate our beloved ones that already passed away, by donating a "Salak" (basket in the northern dialect) to the temple of our village. This basket, filled with food and other useful everyday items, is then drawn at random to be given to a monk in the Phayao region to help him in his spiritual journey. The day is followed by traditional Thai dances and all sorts of festivities. The people of Phayao traditionally prepare large quantities of food and drinks to offer to everyone taking part in the ceremony.
