The elephant is Thailand's national animal. For centuries, its close bond with the local people and the work it has done for them has made it a cornerstone of Thai society. Today, mechanisation and a growing awareness of animal welfare have given these magnificent creatures an entirely different role: no longer put to work as in the past, they are now largely protected and cared for in dedicated sanctuaries. As Northern Thailand boasts the country’s largest expanse of dense forests and jungles, it has long been a habitat of choice for these gentle giants. You will have the opportunity to spend a full or half-day close to them observing, bathing, or even providing their food by preparing their meals yourself.
